This is a quick guide to all topics that I typically cover in a review course for the NBDE Part II. While there are still some topics missing, I will be slowly adding them as I can. 🙂
Radiation Physics
Radiation Biology
Radiographic Technique
- Horizontal Angle
- Vertical Angle
- Image Shift
- Same Lingual, Opposite Buccal
- Same Lingual, Opposite Buccal using vertical angle changes – Practice 1
- Image Magnification
- Image Sharpness
- Image Density
- Image Distortion
- Patient Preparation
- Central Ray Entry
- Increased Density (analog/film) – DEBT
- Decreased Density (analog/film) – DEBT
- Artifacts (digital) – CR
- Artifacts (digital) – DR
Imaging
- Digital – Imaging Basics
- Digital – Contrast Resolution
- Digital – Spatial Resolution
- Digital – Detector Latitude
- Digital – Detector Sensitivity
Normal Radiographic Anatomy
- Intraoral Radiographs – Part 1
- Intraoral Radiographs – Part 2
- Extraoral Radiographs – Part 1
- Extraoral Radiographs – Part 2
Tips:
- Carefully evaluate the radiographs and make sure that they are mounted correctly. i.e. the images are not backwards – patients left on the observers left and vice versa.
- Anatomy is KEY!

Hi Doc
Is this blog to help students prepare for NBDE part two? If I am not a student of your university is there a way I can get materials to help me prepare ? Thanks
This blog is for all topics related to oral radiology. The NBDE page is a quick search of topics/blog posts I recommend students to study for Part 2 of the boards. Please feel free to search around and if there is a topic you are interested in but do not see on here drop me a line and I’ll see what I can do. Thanks. 🙂
Thanks a lot 🙂 really enjoy reading your blogs in oral rad. I have been following it for a year now!
Hi Dr,
Could you please put periapical radiographs on various mishaps in root canal treatment – ledging, zipping etc.?
Thanks
I’ll have to look and see what I have. It may take me a little while to round up some good examples.
Sure thanks 🙂
What is the amount of skin exposure to a patient from the current intraoral radiographic technique ?
This is dependent on several factors, kVp, mA, and exposure time. I’m not able to give you a specific number. Are you looking for a limit of radiation exposure?
I was looking for a specific range – is it between 1-10mr or 1-5 mr. This one of the questions I camw across as I was preparing for the nbde. Thanks
Unfortunately I’m not able to give you a specific number for this. Sorry. 🙁
