Stafne Defect 1


Definition: A developmental indentation of the mandible.  It frequently occurs due to a finger projection of the salivary glands.

Radiographic Features:

Location: Submandibular salivary gland – posterior mandible inferior to inferior alveolar nerve canal. Sublingual salivary gland – anterior mandible.

Edge: Well-defined. Corticated.

Shape: Round to ovoid.

Internal: Radiolucent, unilocular.

Other: None.

Number: Typically single, but may be multiple (rare).
