Radiographic Quality Evaluation: Bad Pantomographs (Part 2)


Onto criteria 3 and 4.

3. Frankfort horizontal plane is positioned on the correct anatomical landmarks creating a slight concave occlusal plane.

  • Error: Improper patient positioning of the Frankfort horizontal plane in the unit causing distortion of the final image.

Note the V-shaped occlusal plane

  • Correction: Move chin superiorly and ensure that the Frankfort horizontal plane line is properly aligned with the inferior border of the orbit and superior aspect of the external auditory meatus.

 

Note the straight occlusal plane

  • Correction: Move chin inferiorly and ensure that the Frankfort horizontal plane line is properly aligned with the inferior border of the orbit and superior aspect of the external auditory meatus.

 

Note the convex occlusal plane

  • Correction: Move chin inferiorly and ensure that the Frankfort horizontal plane line is properly aligned with the inferior border of the orbit and superior aspect of the external auditory meatus.

 

4. Patient standing or sitting tall to prevent overlap of the cervical vertebrae over the ramus of the mandible.

  • Error: Patient hunched over creating a curved back and superimposition of the cervical spine.

  • Correction: Ensure patient is standing or sitting tall (as straight as they physically are capable of) preventing hunching of the back
